About Kudumbashree
Kudumbashree is a people's movement that has made a significant contribution to the social empowerment of women and poverty eradication in Kerala. Its primary objective is to promote women's economic self-reliance and active participation in society.
1. Beginning
On 17 May 1998, the Government of Kerala launched Kudumbashree as a State Poverty Eradication Mission. The mission functions under the leadership of Local Self-Government Institutions with active public participation.

2. Structure – Three Tier System
The activities of Kudumbashree are organized at three levels.

| 1 | Neighbourhood Group (NHG) | The basic unit consisting of 15–20 women. 116 units are functioning in the Grama Panchayat. |

3. Major Activities

To ensure the social, economic and political empowerment of women.
🤝 Formation and Functioning of Self-Help Groups (NHGs)
To promote savings, credit facilities and collective activities through Neighbourhood Groups.
💼 Self-Employment Enterprises
To provide support for starting and managing individual and group enterprises.
🏠 Poverty Eradication
To implement programmes that improve the living standards of poor families.
🌱 Livelihood Development
To create employment opportunities in agriculture, animal husbandry, food processing, service sectors and other areas.
🏦 Financial Inclusion
To facilitate access to bank loans, microfinance and savings schemes.
🌾 Agricultural Activities
To promote organic farming, group farming, vegetable cultivation and nutrition gardens.
❤️ Social Development Activities
To implement activities related to health, sanitation, nutrition and anti-drug awareness.
🎓 Training and Skill Development
To provide vocational and entrepreneurship development training.
🏛️ Cooperation with Local Self-Government Institutions
To ensure active participation in Grama Panchayat development programmes.
🌳 Environmental Protection
To promote waste management, tree planting and various green initiatives.
👧 Balasabha and Youth Activities
To ensure the participation of children and youth in community development activities.
